WHAT is E-book?

E-books are digital publications, that is to say, texts that use electronic files instead of paper as support. They may be called electronic book (e-book), or digital book

--> E-books enjoy certain tools that make the reading easier. These tools allow the reader to find words in the text, highlight phrases, make comments, look up words in the dictionary, among others. Many times, digital books make use of multimedia-video and audio elements. A book on the Internet can also have links that lead to other books available on the web.

--> E-books structure, size and design are created in a way that the visualization, download turnaround and usage of the book become very practical.

--> E-books of the different authors and publishers are protected by copyright so that they cannot be copied unless the author or publisher allows this. Digital books can only be opened on a computer or portable devices where it was saved after downloading. By doing this, they cannot be reproduced or copied on other computers. Generally, e-books are downloaded from the Internet through the services offered by book shops specialized in this type of texts.

E-books are downloaded from the Internet directly to a computer through the services offered by virtual book shops and publishers. In order to be able to read these texts on a portable device, e-books are first downloaded from the Internet to a computer and then to the device. Other ways to gain access to these books are diskettes and CD ROMs which are also available from online book shops and publishers, or from conventional book shops.

Digital books can be read through different mediums such as computers or portable devices (or e-book device), however, no matter what medium is used, a reader program is always needed. There are two programs of this type, Microsoft Reader and Adobe Acrobat reader. Generally speaking, both pieces of software allow the reader to improve the typography definition, highlighting parts of the text, make comments, turn the pages, etc.
